Arbroath, the largest town in Angus is both a holiday resort and an active fishing port with a maritime heritage worth discovering. Dominating the centre of this ancient town is Arbroath Abbey where in 1320 the famous Declaration of Arbroath was signed thus confirming Scotland's Independence from England. Mainly known for its fishing industry, which sadly has suffered a marked decline in the last ten years, much of the action is focused at the "Fit o' the Toon" in the harbour area. The aroma of fish being smoked leads the curious to the smokehouses to see that famous delicacy the Arbroath Smokie being prepared. The town's history is well documented in the Signal Tower Museum. Built in 1813 it was the signalling station for the BellRock Lighthouse, which is situated approximately ten miles off the coast. |
